the fireworks last night led me to revisit this that i wrote January 1, 2011.

As i stand huddled against Meemee, dressed in her plush bathrobe, i press myself as close as possible to her to enclose the warmth from the uncomfortably crisp air blowing off of the dark rolling waves of the bay.
Its New Years Eve night in Sanibel Island Florida and over the dark waves flash colors, vibrant and sparkling.
As counted down from an incredibly old but much adored Dick Clark, midnight has come at last to chime in the newest year.
As i gaze upward from rolling water to the rich, vast blackness expanse above it, the giant fireballs speed into the air one by one, bursting into distant flames and sparks shooting colors into the night.
As i gazed upon this spectacle, along with perhaps every person in the world, celebrating or commemorating this new year into place, i thought about how odd it seems to make such a fuss about it being 2011…will i feel different upon waking tomorrow morning? Probably not….I mean isn’t this celebration in state mainly just because the way our calendar is? So I thought about New Years and reflected on its meaning….
New Years is exceedingly special to people. The clean slate feeling, the fresh start, the newness. This idea is exhilarating and motivating to people to do what they most desire to do or to give up. The idea of the resolution. A new season. As they gaze on this man made spectacle it marks this resolution.
I think i know the reason behind the excitement.
Little do so many of them know, is that right above the explosions of fireballs and color lies a vast galaxy, exploding with constellations of light and color and majesty and life.

This spectacle was given to us and is given to us everyday by a Creator who offers us renewal each morning. We literally are offered a light show, 24/7. The whole reason why people long for the New Years, for the cleanliness, the wholeness is only because of their innate desire for their Creator. Their longing to be forgiven. The desire that goes deeper than our desires to loose a pant size or to put out our last smokes. He offers us not just a resolution, but a revolution of our hearts and our lives.
This year, I plan to gaze upon this spectacle everyday, in the same joy and thankfulness and love in which every person shows on New Years Eve, my God offers me cleanliness everyday. Not just January 1st.
